Stuart O. Miller, DDS, MS
Dr. Miller is a native Tarheel. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his DDS degree from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. He was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy while in dental school and upon graduation began a career as a Naval Dental Officer until retiring after 21 years of active duty service in 2010. Dr. Miller received his Certificate in Endodontics from the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland and his Masters of Sciences from George Washington University. His academic achievements include board certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, research awards from the American Association of Endodontics and professional publications in the Journal of Endodontics and Navy Medicine.
Dr. Miller is very active in organized dentistry at the local, state, and national levels. He is a current or past president of the Tarheel Endodontic Association, Southern Endodontic Study Group, and Onslow County Dental Society. He is also an active member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Endodontists, and the North Carolina Dental Society. Dr. Miller has participated in multiple overseas dental missions and attends One Harbor Church. He continues to integrate himself into the local business community as a member of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce and it’s Military Affairs Committee.
Dr. Miller joined the practice of Dr. Sherman to become Sherman & Miller PA in 2010. He and his wife, the former Tammy Norris of Jacksonville, along with their two children are delighted to live in the beautiful crystal coast area of North Carolina. Dr. Miller’s goal is to provide the highest quality of endodontic treatment in a compassionate and comfortable atmosphere.
Robert L. Sherman, DDS
Dr. Robert Sherman hails from Tacoma, Washington. He graduated from the University Of Washington School Of Dentistry in 1970, then joined the United States Navy serving in Southeast Asia. After three years of specialty training at Bethesda Naval Graduate Dental School, Dr. Sherman was awarded a certificate in endodontic therapy. He achieved Board Certification in 1985. Dr. Sherman began private endodontic practice in Jacksonville, North Carolina after retiring from the Navy in 1989.
Dr. Sherman has served in several leadership positions including President of the Onslow County Dental Society and the North Carolina Endodontic Society. He is a lifetime member of the American Dental Society and the American Association of Endodontics. He was made an honorary alumnus of the North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1997. He was elected to membership in the American College of Dentists, the International Society of Dentistry and the Cosmos Society of Washington, D.C.
He is married to Lucy Dadourion Sherman.
Jeffrey L. Hockett, DDS, MSD
Dr. Hockett is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1994 and completed flight school earning his wings and serving 8 years as a Naval Flight Officer. In 2006, he graduated from the University of North Carolina, School of Dentistry then completed his residency training in Endodontics at the University of Washington in Seattle where, in 2008, he earned his Specialty Certificate in Endodontics and Masters of Science in Dentistry.
Dr. Hockett served as a Navy Dental Officer and Endodontist in Norfolk, Virginia from 2008 to 2015. There he served as Endodontic Department Head, Command Specialty Consultant for Endodontics, Senior Watch Officer, Assistant Clinic Manager and mentored residents in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) and General Practice Residency (GPR) programs. He has extensive experience in civilian endodontic practice while stationed in the Hampton Roads area.
Dr. Hockett served as a staff Endodontist and AEGD mentor at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune from 2015 to 2018 when he retired after 20 years of active service. He is a member of the Onslow County Dental Society, Tarheel Endodontic Association, American Dental Association and the American Association of Endodontists. Dr. Hockett has 4 children and when not chasing his kids, he enjoys reading, exercising and an occasional round of golf.
Dr. John Jeffrey Neal, D.D.S., M.S.
Dr. Neal has been affiliated with Carolinas Center for Endodontics since 2012. He is a native Hoosier, hailing from northwest Indiana. He enlisted in the Navy from 1989 to 1994 then attended college in Indiana and graduated from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 2005. He has served as an active duty dental officer in the United States Navy since 2005. Following tours at Marine Corps Recruiting Depot, Parris Island and Naval Health Center Great Lakes, he completed Endodontic Residency training at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School. There he received his Certificate in Endodontics and a Master’s Degree from The George Washington University. His academic achievements include the Student Leadership Award, the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence, Board Certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and professional publications in the Journal of Endodontics.
Dr. Neal is very active in education and organized Dentistry. He has served on Staff at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in the Research Department and as the Program Director for Endodontics. He was President of the Edward C. Penick Endodontic Study Club in our nations capital and currently serves as a Board Director and the Mentorship Chair for the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics. He is an active member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Endodontists, and the American Board of Endodontics. Dr. Neal has over 20 years of service in the United States Navy and currently is serving as the Chief Dental Officer at 2nd Dental Battalion/Naval Dental Center Camp Lejeune.
Dr. Neal and his family, wife Kelli and two sons have spent over 8 years in the coastal area of North Carolina and look forward to many more years! Dr. Neal is committed to a goal of life-long learning. He is grateful for all of the mentors that have contributed to his education and career, in turn, his passion now is to educate and help others.
Dr. Brian M. Gillen, DDS
Dr. Gillen graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School in 2001, completed an AEGD residency with the United States Navy in July of 2002, and an Endodontic Residency at the Medical College of Georgia in 2011. He has worked in private practice in Maryland and Georgia, and served his country in the United States, Djibouti, and Japan. Dr. Gillen has over 20 years of experience and is delighted to be able to provide the highest quality care to his patients.
He and his family have called eastern North Carolina home for 12 years and look forward to doing so for many more.
